Instacast 2.0 Available
My favorite podcast app, Instacast, got a big upgrade and new pricing structure. I haven’t purchased the pro upgrade yet, but I’m sure I will, it’s only $1.99. As much as I use the app, even if I don’t need the features, it’s a way to support the developer. I love how cheap apps are in the Appstore but I also know if we want quality apps somebody needs to be getting paid to make them.

Loving this game, it’s universal and only $0.99. Give it a try, support independent developers. I’m not even that good and it’s still fun.

Topps Pennant
Bought this app for $4.99 a year ago when it was just called Pennant. Looks like Topps bought the app from the independent developer, updated, and rebranded it. The original developer pulled the app from the App Store so no more updates. I won’t be buying it again and I think it’s pretty shitty of Topps. I don’t blame the original developer for selling the app, but Topps could’ve renamed it and kept updating the version baseball fans had already bought.
Update via @mbram, so evidently Topps didn’t have a choice.
@bigjim it’s due to apple’s policy. when an app is acquired, they do not allow the customers, and therefore the free updates, to transfer.
One last update, I bought Pennant last year. Why do I need to pay for the new version?

So about this Readability, Instapaper, publishers getting paid or not getting paid thing
So about this Readability, Instapapaer, publishers getting paid or not getting paid thing … I’ve seen several blog posts comparing this to Betamax but maybe I’m just not that old but it seems more like Tivo to me. Tivo performs the exact same service for television that Readability does for the web; save it and watch it later. They charge a fee for the their hardware (their app) and a monthly fee for their service (the subscription). Does Tivo make payments to CBS, NBC, ABC, HBO, etc. for using their content to make their hardware useful? Without content to record a Tivo is useless, without content to save for later, Readability or Instapaper are useless. Instapaper charges for the app and after that the service is free. Readability’s app is free but is trying to collect money and send it back to the content creators. I don’t see a problem with either method.
I will say, I think if Readability says it’s going to pay out 70% of the money it takes in for subscriptions to publishers, it needs to pay out 70% and not hold any back. Publishers should only get money if they’re signed up, no back pay. Readability splits the 70% amongst all publishers signed up at that time based on the percentage of articles each had viewed that month.
By the way, I use Instapaper and have never tried Readability. I’m also a subscriber to Instapaper, enjoy following Marco Arment and sending some $ his way to support his product.
